Muralhas Fernandinas do Porto

4.4 ·

Explore the Muralhas Fernandinas, medieval walls and towers standing beside the Luís I Bridge. Climb along the fortifications and look out over Porto and the Douro.

📖

Full description

The Muralhas Fernandinas are surviving stretches of the 14th-century walls built when Porto's population outgrew its older Cerca Velha and the wealthy bourgeoisie settled beyond it. Stone walls and towers stand near the Luís I Bridge and can be seen clearly from the bridge itself.

Reviewers describe it as more of a wall and tower than a full castle, a modest side attraction, though a visit offers scenic views of the city and river. A visit takes about 45 minutes, and the area includes some uphill walking.

Reviews

It is a little side attraction next to the Ponte Luis II bridge in Porto. While there are some tangerine trees planted next to the wall, there are some dilapidated house just underneath the wall, between the wall and the bridge. Nevertheless, the wall itself looked nice under the bright sun. I don't think it is…
