St. Boniface's Abbey

4.5 ·

Step into St. Boniface's Abbey, a quiet Byzantine-style monastery church in Maxvorstadt. Find the tombs of King Ludwig I and Queen Therese and take in the solemn interior.

📖

Full description

St. Boniface's Abbey in Maxvorstadt was built in the 19th century under Ludwig I, and the church holds the tomb of the king and his wife Therese.

Badly damaged in 1945, it has since been restored. The interior follows a Byzantine-influenced design, and some visitors find the decoration a little heavy, while others praise the services, including music and incense at major festivals.

The monks also run charitable work for poor and homeless people in the city. It makes a quiet, short stop away from the busier sights.

Reviews

I attended Easter mass here in 2026. It was a beautiful service delivered in German, with a full church orchestra performance and plenty of incense. Only complaint was the interior decoration really took me out of the vibes - too sleek, modern, and devoid of character for my taste. “Modern Art” seems to be the decor…
