Pause at the Feldherrnhalle, the grand Italianate loggia at the head of Odeonsplatz. Study its statues and arches, then follow the surrounding streets to the nearby Residenz and Theatinerkirche.

📖

Full description

The Feldherrnhalle is a monumental open loggia built between 1841 and 1844 by Friedrich von Gärtner, modelled on Italian architecture and flanked by statues honouring Bavarian military leaders. It stands at the edge of Odeonsplatz and was also the site of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, a layer of history that visitors often notice on the pavement and walls nearby.

The building is viewed from outside and takes about 15 minutes, usually combined with the neighbouring Theatinerkirche and Residenz. It is open at all hours since it stands on a public square.
