Theatine Church

4.8 ·

Pause at the Theatine Church, the yellow Baroque landmark facing Odeonsplatz. Step inside to see the white stucco dome and the royal graves, then take in the twin-towered facade from the square outside.

📖

Full description

The Theatine Church, or Theatinerkirche, dominates Odeonsplatz with its yellow Baroque facade, twin towers, and large dome. It was commissioned in the 17th century to celebrate the birth of a long-awaited heir, and it follows Italian High Baroque models.

Inside, the walls and vaults are covered in bright white stucco, a striking contrast to the colourful exterior. The church remains open for worship as well as visits, and it holds the graves of the last Bavarian king and queen.

Entry is free, and a short stop of around 15 minutes is enough to take in the interior.

Reviews

A magnificent and striking church at Odeonsplatz with a stunning yellow Baroque facade and twin towers. Saw it during the blue hour just after sunset, and the lighting made the architecture look absolutely magical and breathtaking. One of the most beautiful churches in Munich
