Asamkirche

Step through the unassuming door of the Asamkirche and into a baroque jewel box. Spend a quarter of an hour studying the gold leaf, frescoes and stucco packed into one small nave.

📖

Full description

The Asamkirche is a small church from the early 1700s tucked into a busy shopping street in the old town. Its modest exterior contrasts sharply with an interior swathed in gold leaf, frescoes and elaborate stucco, a combination that leaves many visitors surprised on first entering.

Because it is so compact, a visit takes around 15 minutes, though the space rewards slow looking at the ceiling and altar. It is also used for classical music performances, so visitors sometimes find the church in concert mode.

Entry is free.

Reviews

Arguably the most beautiful place I visited in Munich! A breathtakingly detailed church that is tucked away from the large crowds, making it rather quiet and peaceful. There were only a few others inside and we went at the peak of the day. Must visit if you are in the city! Have not seen a church like this anywhere…
