Ohel Jakob Synagogue

4.4 ·

Pause at Ohel Jakob Synagogue, a bold modern landmark standing apart from Munich's historic streets. Take in its striking walled form from outside during a short stop on an old-town stroll.

📖

Full description

Ohel Jakob is a contemporary synagogue near Sankt-Jakobs-Platz, notable for a design that reviewers call jarringly different from its surroundings, with high walls that give the building a closed, protected feel. Most visitors admire it from the outside as a piece of modern architecture.

Access is limited: interior visits are not simply walk-in, it is closed on Saturdays, and some visitors report not being admitted on arrival. It suits a short architectural stop on a walk through the old town, paired with other nearby sights.

Reviews

I didn't have an opportunity to visit the place a visitor, but I saw it from the outside and the building itself is a piece of art. The high walls around give the vibe that the building and the community connected to it are closed for outsiders. But maybe that was the intention.
