Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa

4.6 ·

Step inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, one of Milan's most unusual churches. Spend a short, quiet visit looking at the ossuary chapel, where skulls and bones form its striking decoration.

📖

Full description

From the outside, San Bernardino alle Ossa looks like a small, plain church, but its ossuary chapel is covered in human skulls and bones arranged as decoration. The site's origins go back to 1210, when a cemetery and a small chamber for storing remains were established here.

Visitors describe it as calm and uncrowded, free to enter and without queues, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Duomo and the M1 metro station. It makes a memorable, unusual stop in a short 20-minute visit and sits well beside the larger central sights.

Opening hours differ slightly by day.

Reviews

Beautiful and no one there first thing in the morning on a Friday. It was smaller than I expected but also much taller than I expected. The high ceilings really made it more dramatic. The imagery was haunting and so impressive. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area near the duomo.
