See the Puerta de Alcalá, Madrid's neoclassical triumphal arch beside Retiro Park. Circle the arch to study its carved stone and sculptures, then continue into the park.

📖

Full description

The Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid's most recognisable landmarks, a neoclassical triumphal arch standing in the centre of Plaza de la Independencia right beside the Retiro Park. Its stone carvings and sculptures are the main draw, and the monument is open to view at all hours at no cost.

Reviews are largely positive, though one visitor found it less special than the gates of Berlin or Paris, and some mention that the surrounding area can be under construction. It is a short stop of around fifteen minutes, easily paired with a walk into the park.

Reviews

Well, the gate is not sth very special, it’s nice but in my opinion there are much more beautiful ones like gates in Berlin and Paris. The small great area around it was under construction. Check both sides, there are different sculptures and figures on each sides.
