Barrio de las Letras

Walk the Barrio de las Letras, the Madrid quarter where Spain's Golden Age writers lived. Follow the literary quotations underfoot along Calle de las Huertas, then settle into a tapas bar around Plaza de Santa Ana.

📖

Full description

The Barrio de las Letras sits between Plaza de Santa Ana and the Paseo del Prado, in the heart of the Centro district. It takes its name from the Golden Age writers who lived and worked here, and brass-lettered verses embedded in the street surface of Calle de las Huertas still mark their presence.

Narrow lanes, small squares, theatres and old tavernas give the area a compact, walkable character. Cafés and tapas bars fill the ground floors, and the mood shifts from quiet and literary by morning to lively once evening arrives.
