Arab Walls

4.3 ·

Trace Madrid back to its Moorish beginnings at the Arab Walls. Walk the paved garden and look down from the platforms onto the weathered stone of the original 9th-century fortifications.

📖

Full description

The Arab Walls are the remains of the stone fortifications raised by Moorish forces in the 9th century, when Madrid began as a fortress settlement. Today a paved garden in the Centro district wraps around the surviving sections, with raised platforms that let you look down on the masonry.

It is a quick, free stop that suits anyone tracing the city's origins beyond the royal and Habsburg sights. Visitors note that the information boards are worn and set apart from the park, so the site rewards a little advance reading.

Good to know

  • Check opening days first, since the site is closed on Mondays and was shut for some visitors
  • read up on the walls beforehand because the signage is weathered
  • combine it with a walk through the surrounding old quarter.

Reviews

An interesting piece of Madrid's history, but the information boards are in a pretty poor state and, for some reason, aren't in the attached park and easily accessible, but up by the road with a few even behind the fence.
