4.7 ·

Step into The Courtauld Gallery, tucked inside Somerset House. See masterworks by Manet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gauguin up close, including Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, in a collection compact enough to explore in about an hour.

✨

Reasons to go

  • The collection was built almost entirely from a single private bequest by Samuel Courtauld.
  • It holds major works by Manet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gauguin despite its small size.
  • The gallery occupies rooms inside Somerset House, a historic building with a courtyard and riverside terrace.

Full description

The Courtauld Gallery occupies rooms within Somerset House and punches well above its size, holding masterworks by Manet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gauguin in a collection built almost entirely from one private bequest. Reviewers consistently note that while it isn't London's largest gallery, the quality of what's on display is remarkable, a sentiment reflected in its perfect culture score and strong rating.

Its moderate hidden-gem score suggests it's known to art lovers without being a secret, and a ticketed entry fee reflects its more curated, boutique positioning compared to the free national galleries. An hour is enough for a focused visit, though special exhibitions can extend that.

Reviews

Beautiful space and wonderful exploration of impressionist art. Can easily visit with a spare hour or two in central London. Both times I've been the special exhibition was a nice add on.
