Covent Garden

Once London's main fruit and vegetable market, Covent Garden's cast-iron market hall was saved from demolition in the 1970s and reborn as a covered shopping arcade ringed by cafes. Street performers — jugglers, opera singers, escapologists — work the cobbled piazza on a rota overseen by the market itself, and the Royal Opera House and several West End theatres sit just off it. Neal's Yard's candy-coloured courtyard and the narrow lanes of Seven Dials add pockets of independent shops nearby. It's unapologetically touristy, but the architecture and street theatre make it worth the crowds.
