National Coach Museum

4.6 ·

Step into the National Coach Museum, where an opulent 18th-century riding arena shelters Portugal's royal carriages. Walk among gilded, painted coaches from the 16th to 19th centuries and head upstairs for even more of the collection.

📖

Full description

The National Coach Museum fills a grand 18th-century palace riding arena with royal carriages dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, many once used for royal transportation and ceremony. The vehicles are richly carved, gilded and painted, which makes the collection as much about decorative art as about transport.

Reviewers describe it as unique and impressive, and note that it is worth going upstairs to see more of the display. A typical visit takes around 75 minutes, and its budget-friendly entry suits a morning or afternoon stop in Belém.

Reviews

I ended up here because my 2yo was too young to be let in the neighboring earthquake museum, so I had to spend some time in the area and I was lucky to have found this interesting museum. The spectrum and details of each model really brings you into perspective about what luxury transportation of previous centuries…
