Palácio Nacional de Belém

4.5 ·

Pause at Palácio Nacional de Belém, the elegant 16th-century seat of Portugal's presidency. Admire its facade and grounds, and look into the museum housed in the former coach house.

📖

Full description

Palácio Nacional de Belém is used by Portugal's presidents as an office rather than a residence, and was built in 1559. Visitors describe it as understated but elegant, with grounds that are free to see and rarely crowded.

A modern museum on the history of the presidency occupies the former coach house. Several reviewers came across it by chance while walking Belém and enjoyed it from the outside even when interior tours were unavailable.

It makes a quick, low-effort stop, around 20 minutes, between other Belém sights.

Reviews

One of the most beautiful palaces I've seen in Europe (and I've seen quite a few). This palace is huge, magnificent, and incredibly preserved. It's a mystery to me why it's nearly empty but that makes it even more enjoyable to visit. Don't miss the garden two minutes away.
