Alfama

Lose yourself in Alfama, the labyrinth of lanes that forms Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood. Climb tiled stairways, pause at miradouros overlooking the red rooftops and river, and follow the sound of fado to a tiny local tasca.

📖

Full description

Alfama is the oldest quarter of Lisbon, a steep tangle of alleys, stairways, and small squares that survived the 1755 earthquake better than much of the city. Its pastel and azulejo-covered houses climb the hillside beneath the Castelo de São Jorge, with miradouros opening onto rooftops and the river.

Laundry lines, tiny tascas, and fado drifting from open doors give it a lived-in, village-like feel. Getting lost is part of the appeal, but the climbs are real, and the lanes reward unhurried exploration over a fixed route.
