Istanbul Modern occupies a Renzo Piano building on the Bosphorus harbour, and its sleek metallic architecture is, for many reviewers, the highlight of the visit. Inside, its collections cover Turkish and international modern and contemporary art, with changing exhibitions and a cinema.

The cafeteria and roof terrace give views over the water, and the museum is described as clean and rarely overcrowded. It is an easy walk along the shore from the Galata Bridge and close to restaurants and shops, so a visit of around 90 minutes fits neatly into a day in Karaköy.
