Porta Romana

4.4 ·

See Porta Romana, a surviving gate of Florence's old defensive walls. Spend a few minutes studying its imposing brick arch before heading on toward the Boboli Gardens.

📖

Full description

Porta Romana is one of the main historic gates in Florence's medieval city walls, dated by visitors to 1326 and built as part of the city's defences. Its tall brick arch stands at the southern end of the Oltrarno, close to the entrance to the Boboli Gardens, and it is well preserved and easy to appreciate from the street.

Some reviewers find there is little to do beyond looking, so it suits architecture-minded visitors and those passing through on the way to the gardens. A visit takes around 15 minutes and costs nothing.

💡

Good to know

  • Pair it with a Boboli Gardens visit since the entrance is nearby
  • look at the brickwork and arch proportions from across the road to take it in
  • go in the morning when traffic and foot traffic are lighter.

Reviews

Not much to see. Just tons of tourists everywhere, which gets crazier as you get closer to the arno river. It is a very important gate in the history of the city, and if you like such architecture it's worth a visit but then there are much better places to be in in Florence.
