Giotto's Bell Tower

4.8 ·

Climb Giotto's Bell Tower for a close look at the Duomo from above. Work your way up the narrow stairs, pausing at each level for views, until you reach the open terrace over Florence.

📖

Full description

Designed by Giotto and clad in polychrome marble, this Gothic bell tower stands beside the cathedral and offers one of the best vantage points over Florence. The ascent is made on tight stairs with several resting spots and views opening up at each level, so comfortable shoes and reasonable fitness help.

From the top terrace you look directly across at the Duomo's dome, which is the main reason many visitors choose this climb over the dome itself. Entry is included in the Brunelleschi Pass for the cathedral complex, and reviewers note it can be windy near the top.

Reviews

These steps will test your quads and sense of personal space. Not to bad and plenty of resting spots. The stairs are very tight. Each layer up offered greats views of Florence. Try to make it to the top for a rewarding view of the Duomo. Get the Brunelleschi Pass for the Bell tower and a few other sites.
