Baptistery of St. John

4.6 ·

Step inside the Baptistery of St. John, the octagonal landmark facing Florence's cathedral. Study the bronze doors outside, then tilt your head back to read the gold mosaic ceiling above.

📖

Full description

One of the oldest buildings in Florence, the Baptistery of St. John is an octagonal structure faced in green and white marble that stands directly in front of the cathedral.

Its fame rests on the bronze doors and on the interior mosaic ceiling, where thousands of glass tesserae on a gold background surround a central figure of Christ the Judge. Visits are short, around half an hour.

Some reviewers found scaffolding and coverings obscuring parts of the ceiling during restoration, so the experience can vary with the works under way.

Reviews

The magnificent mosaic ceiling, composed of thousands of glass mosaic pieces set against a gold background, is truly breathtaking. At its center is a depiction of Christ the Judge. It is the first structure that catches your eye when you arrive at the city square. Don’t miss out on visiting it just because you see…
