Basilica di San Lorenzo

4.6 ·

Discover Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Medici family's parish church in the heart of Florence. Walk Brunelleschi's harmonious nave and see the library Michelangelo designed for the dynasty.

📖

Full description

Basilica di San Lorenzo is a Renaissance church whose plain exterior hides Brunelleschi's calm, geometric interior. It served as the burial place of the Medici and houses a library designed by Michelangelo, while his New Sacristy is part of the same complex.

Reviewers note it is quieter than the nearby Duomo and praise the composed atmosphere inside. The church stands right beside the Medici Chapels, so the two are easily visited together.

Allow around 45 minutes, and be aware the unfinished-looking facade gives little hint of the interior.

  • Pair it with the Medici Chapels next door in one outing
  • expect a quieter visit than at the Duomo
  • do not judge the church by its bare exterior, since the interior is the point.

Reviews

Step into history at San Lorenzo. Brunelleschi’s elegant interior architecture and Michelangelo’s breathtaking New Sacristy make it an absolute must-see in Florence. It's less crowded than the Duomo, offering a peaceful, deeply moving art experience. This is an essential visit!
