Explore the Museum of Edinburgh, tucked into historic Royal Mile buildings with free entry. Follow the city's story through artefacts, from everyday objects to rare pieces, in about an hour.

📖

Full description

The Museum of Edinburgh occupies a group of historic buildings on the Royal Mile and tells the story of the city through everyday objects, rare artefacts and displays on its social and industrial past. Entry is free and an hour is usually enough.

Many reviewers rate the old building itself as the best part of the visit, while some find the interior old-fashioned and a few rooms rather dark. It is a modest museum that rewards visitors who enjoy local history over large, polished displays.

Reviews

It’s very tiny from outside and surprisingly big inside the building. The museum tells a lovely story of Edinburg and is well equipped. The museum is for free, and is being run by donations :)
