Find Dunbars Close, a secret courtyard garden just off the Royal Mile. Step through the passage and wander its parterres and hedges for a quiet break from the Old Town crowds.

📖

Full description

Dunbars Close Garden is a small, recreated 17th-century garden hidden behind a passage off the Canongate, part of the Royal Mile. Sheltered against a church wall, it holds neat parterres, hedges, shrubs and trees in a courtyard setting that visitors often describe as a surprise, since nothing on the street hints at what lies beyond.

It is well maintained by volunteers and offers a quiet pause from the crowds, with a typical visit of around twenty minutes. Its calm atmosphere makes it a convenient picnic or lunch stop during a day exploring the Old Town.

Reviews

A really surprising green oasis off the Royal Mile. Great spot to get away from the crowds. Ideal place to take a lunch / picnic to eat. Lovely planting and boarders to look at. All maintained by The Mushroom Trust, who must be congratulated for keeping this space thriving. Definitely worth 20 mins of your time when…
