The Scheunenviertel, meaning barn quarter, was historically Berlin's poorest district and the heart of its Jewish community before the Holocaust; the New Synagogue's gold dome on Oranienburger Straße still marks that history, alongside small memorial plaques set into the pavement for deported residents. Today the neighborhood is one of Mitte's most fashionable, centered on the Hackesche Höfe, a beautifully restored complex of interlinked Art Nouveau courtyards housing galleries, boutiques, and cafés.

The surrounding streets — Rosenthaler Straße, Auguststraße — are dense with independent design shops, contemporary art galleries, and some of Berlin's better cocktail bars, drawing a mix of design-conscious locals and visitors. It rewards slow wandering through courtyards rather than following a fixed sightseeing route.
