Full description

St. Hedwig's Cathedral was commissioned by Frederick the Great in the 1740s as Prussia's first Catholic church since the Reformation, modeled loosely on Rome's Pantheon with a domed rotunda form.

Gutted in World War II, it was rebuilt in a starkly modern style that surprises many first-time visitors — one reviewer calls the contrast between the classical exterior and 21st-century interior 'a bit of a shock' — and it underwent a further major renovation completed in the 2020s. Sitting on Bebelplatz alongside the State Opera and Humboldt University, it's a quick, free visit that pairs naturally with the square's other landmarks and the nearby book-burning memorial.

Its relatively modest 4.3 rating reflects a mix of visitor reactions to the modern interior, which some find cold and others find quietly moving.

Reviews

What a lovely cathedral . I couldnt help but thinking if the congregations souls are as imaculate as the inside of this church i am sure that they will be ok . Perhaps they could pray for me , i was surprised i left without being struck down by lightning . Another candel lit for mum and another prayer said . Maybe…
