Neues Museum

4.5 (15,733)$$ · Mid-range

David Chipperfield's celebrated reconstruction of the war-damaged Neues Museum deliberately left visible scars from its ruined decades alongside restored original interiors, creating a building nearly as discussed as its contents — chief among them the Egyptian Museum's star holding, the bust of Nefertiti. A perfect must-see and culture score, alongside a 4.5-star rating from nearly 16,000 reviews, confirm it as one of Berlin's unmissable museums, and its essentially nonexistent hidden-gem score reflects just how firmly it's on every visitor's list. Booking is required rather than optional, and reviewers warn it gets genuinely crowded, so timing matters. At 120 minutes, it needs a full, unhurried visit to take in the wider Egyptian and prehistoric collections beyond the headline bust.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1David Chipperfield's reconstruction intentionally preserved visible war damage alongside restored original interiors
  • 2The Egyptian Museum's bust of Nefertiti is the star holding of the collection
  • 3The building itself was left in ruins for decades before its celebrated rebuild

💡 Good to know

  • 1Booking is required — reserve a timed entry slot well ahead
  • 2go as early in the day as possible to beat the crowds around the Nefertiti bust
  • 3budget the full two hours, since the collection extends well beyond Egyptian antiquities.

What people say

"Good size museum with large Egyptian collection, including the famous Nefertiti clay bust. Wonder around and discover the many galleries. Note that it can get warm inside during hot days and there’s little air circulation. Also, they restrict photography in some of the displays, including the Nefertiti bust (but you can take a long distance photo from the adjacent room."
