Full description

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, more than a hundred artists from over twenty countries were invited in 1990 to paint directly onto this surviving section along the Spree River, turning a former death strip into what's now the longest open-air gallery in the world. Dmitri Vrubel's 'My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love,' depicting Brezhnev and Honecker kissing, remains its most photographed panel, though the murals have been repainted and restored several times since weathering and graffiti took their toll on the originals.

With a perfect must-see score and nearly 66,000 reviews, it draws visitors as much for the historical weight of walking beside an actual remnant of the Wall as for the art itself. A flat, easy walk that suits almost any visitor and pairs naturally with other Cold War sites in the city.

Reviews

I visited East Side Gallery and found it very interesting. There are many artworks to admire and the atmosphere is quite special. However, it was very crowded and sometimes felt a bit suffocating because of too many people. Still, it’s a nice place to visit when you are in Berlin.
