Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus

4.7 ·

Take a seat in the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, where Greek drama took shape on the Acropolis slope. Climb the tiered stone rows and look down at the stage where ancient audiences once gathered.

📖

Full description

The Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus lies on the south slope of the Acropolis and is among the earliest theatres of ancient Greece, with origins in the 6th century BC. Its tiered stone seating once held around 15,000 spectators, and it is associated with the first performances of classical tragedy and comedy.

It is part of the Acropolis complex, so it is reached with the same ticket, and many visitors see it near the start of the ascent. Reviewers note the strong first impression of the scale and the chance to picture performances here.

Around 30 minutes is typical.

💡

Good to know

  • See it early on your way up, as it sits near the entry path and gets busier later
  • your Acropolis ticket covers it, so no separate purchase is needed
  • wear sturdy shoes because the stone seating is uneven.

Reviews

I first saw this place 20 years ago.... Still as impressive now. The idea this was created so far back is amazing, the scale of it. It's part of the Acropolis complex, so you have to.purchase the tickets, and I suggest you do a guided tour. The guides are amazing in allowing us to understand and relate the complex to…
