Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary

4.7 ·

Step inside the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation, Athens' grand cathedral on Mitropoleos Square. Take in the chandeliers, arches and gilded icons that fill its candlelit interior.

📖

Full description

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens is the city's main Orthodox church, built in the 1800s in a monumental blend of Greco-Byzantine and neoclassical styles. Visitors describe a quiet, calm interior lit softly, with elegant arches, dense iconography, large chandeliers and candles.

It still functions as a working place of worship, so services and festival days add to the atmosphere. Entry is free and daily hours are long, making it an easy stop in central Athens whether you come for the architecture or simply for a few minutes of stillness.
