Look closely at the Little Metropolis on Mitropoleos Square, a Byzantine church stitched from ancient marble. Trace the carved reliefs on its outer walls, then step into the small interior.

📖

Full description

Often called the Little Metropolis, this small church stands on Mitropoleos Square beside the Cathedral and was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its walls are assembled largely from recycled ancient marble and decorated with stone carvings on the exterior, which is where most of its interest lies.

It once served as the seat of the archbishop after the Parthenon was no longer used as a church. The interior is snug, and entry is free.

Reviewers call it an architectural marvel, and it takes only a short time to see.
