📖

Full description

The Narrenturm, a striking former mental hospital from the 1700s in Alsergrund, now holds Vienna's pathological-anatomical collection. Exhibits cover anatomy, illness and death, including preserved specimens and unusual medical oddities gathered over more than a century.

Reviewers call it graphic, grim and fascinating, best suited to visitors with some medical interest and a strong stomach. There is usually no queue at the entrance, and about 45 minutes is enough.

It is an unusual choice that stands apart from Vienna's imperial and fine-art museums.
