Mary at the Strand

4.7 ·

Slip into Mary at the Strand, one of Vienna's last Gothic churches. Walk down its narrow nave to see the altar sculptures, stained glass and painted pulpit in quiet surroundings.

📖

Full description

Maria am Gestade sits on a slope above the former river bank, a slim late-Gothic church whose narrowness gives its interior an intimate, calm feel. Visitors point to the carved altar, the stained glass windows, the decorated pulpit and the paintings, and describe the doors as welcoming for as long as you wish to stay.

It is one of the few Gothic churches left in the city, so it offers a different look from the Baroque that dominates Innere Stadt. Entry is free during opening hours, and a visit takes around 15 minutes.

Reviews

The altar was unique and I loved the sculptures inside and how beautiful and peaceful it felt. It's a rather narrow church which makes it feel rather cozy. I recommend visiting this church to appreciate it's architecture.
