Looshaus

4.5 ·

Stop at the Looshaus, the stark white building that once scandalised Vienna. Study its unadorned facade, then step inside to see the wooden interior and any design exhibition on display.

📖

Full description

Built for the tailoring firm Goldman & Salatsch, the Looshaus replaced ornament with smooth surfaces and strict geometry, a deliberate break from the decorated buildings around it in Vienna's Innere Stadt. Adolf Loos, a pioneer of modern architecture, designed it as a statement of restraint, and visitors still describe it as bold beside its ornate neighbours.

The building later served as a bank, and its wooden interior and occasional design exhibitions can be seen during opening hours. It takes about 15 minutes, making it an easy architectural stop on a walk through the old centre.

Reviews

A really interesting building that stands out from the usual ornate Vienna architecture. Its simple, modern design feels surprisingly bold compared to everything around it. Worth stopping by, especially if you’re into architecture or want to see a different side of Vienna
