Kohlmarkt is a short pedestrian thoroughfare in the Innere Stadt, lined with luxury boutiques, designer brands and long-established specialty shops. Its name goes back to a time when it was a market for firewood and later charcoal, a trade that has long since moved on.

Reviewers describe it as elegant and distinctly Viennese, pleasant for window browsing even without buying, and especially lively with festive lights at Christmas. Half an hour is enough for a walk along it, and it leads naturally toward the Hofburg end of the old town.
