Take your seat at the Burgtheater, Vienna's grand national stage on the Ringstrasse. Arrive early to see the Klimt-decorated staircases, then watch a German-language production in a richly ornamented 19th-century auditorium.

📖

Full description

The Burgtheater is Austria's national theatre and one of the most prestigious German-language stages in Europe. Its 1888 building on the Ringstrasse is lined with statues and holds staircases decorated by Gustav Klimt and his associates, alongside work by Franz Matsch.

The renovated interior rewards visitors who come early to look around before the curtain. Most productions are performed in German, so it suits travellers who enjoy the theatre as architecture and occasion as much as the language of the play.

Evening performances give the building its full atmosphere.

Reviews

We had opportunity to see the interior after the renovations were completed. It is a must see in vienna with many Klimpt early works and Matsch pieces. Discovering the artwork with a guide would make the visit more digestible and interesting.
