Piazza San Marco

4.7 ·

Stand in Piazza San Marco, the heart of Venice and the point where the city's main sights converge. Walk the arcades, take in the basilica's facade and watch the square shift from busy daytime to evening calm.

📖

Full description

Piazza San Marco is the central gathering place of Venice, a vast arcaded square with St Mark's Basilica at one end and the Campanile and Doge's Palace beside it. Open 24 hours, it changes character through the day: reviewers describe heavy crowds in the daytime and a much more pleasant atmosphere early in the morning or in the evening.

Cafes with live music line the arcades, and the square works both as a destination in itself and as the hub that most Venice itineraries pass through. Around 45 minutes is enough to take in the architecture and photograph it.
