Puerta de Córdoba

4.4 ·

Seek out Puerta de Córdoba, the last medieval gate standing on Seville's northern wall. Walk up to its battered stone arch and follow the surviving stretch of rampart beside it.

📖

Full description

Puerta de Córdoba is one of the old gates of Seville's defensive wall, built into the northern stretch of the circuit close to the Macarena district and next to the church of San Hermenegildo. It is the only medieval entrance on the northern wall that still stands, which makes it a rare, tangible piece of the city's fortified past.

Visitors note how much of the surrounding wall has survived, and that it rewards a short walk even when the gate itself is closed. It is a quick, free stop that suits a morning or lunchtime wander through the northern Casco Antiguo.

Good to know

  • Combine it with the Macarena walls and the neighbouring church of San Hermenegildo
  • the gate can be closed on some days, but the exterior and adjoining wall are worth seeing regardless
  • allow only 15 minutes.

Reviews

Amazing that there is so much of this fantastic edifice standing. Open or not, it's worth the walk to see this. I couldn't believe how much of the wall was still intact.
