Tor Marancia

Tor Marancia was an unremarkable post-war public housing district until the 2015 Big City Life project commissioned a group of international street artists to cover its apartment blocks in large-scale murals, turning ordinary residential facades into an outdoor gallery. The murals address social and human themes rather than purely decorative ones, giving the estate a distinct identity it lacked before. It sits south of the historic centre near the Appian Way and the Catacombs, making it feasible to combine with ancient sites on the same trip out of the centre. It remains a real, lived-in neighbourhood rather than a tourist attraction dressed up as one, so visits should be respectful of residents.
