Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum

4.5 (896)$ · Budget-friendly

Built to Andersen's own specifications in the early 20th century as both home and studio, this museum preserves the sculptor's ambitious, large-scale figurative works exactly as he intended them to be seen, filling grand rooms with bronze and marble figures on a scale unusual for a single-artist house museum. Reviewers consistently describe near-empty galleries even on weekdays, calling the discovery of such a substantial collection with so few other visitors genuinely surprising. A 4.5 rating and solid local and hidden-gem scores fit a museum known mainly to those specifically interested in early 20th-century sculpture, situated a short but easy walk from the city center. Ongoing restoration in parts of the building means not every room is always accessible.

What people say

"Beautiful museum. One of the grand rooms on the ground floor was in restoration so I didn't get to see everything. But I can say that it is absolutely worth paying a visit. There are QR codes throughout the museum to better understand the history of Andersen's life and work alongside the explanations given in the physical space. I was also greeted warmly at the entrance, and they have no problem helping out non-Italian speakers."
