✨

Reasons to go

  • The central obelisk was brought to Rome by Augustus, predating the piazza's surrounding architecture by nearly two millennia.
  • The square's symmetrical layout, framed by the twin churches Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, dates from a 19th-century redesign.
  • Santa Maria del Popolo church at the piazza's northern end houses Caravaggio paintings.

Full description

Long the ceremonial entry point for travelers arriving in Rome from the north, the piazza takes its dramatic symmetrical form from a 19th-century redesign, with the twin, almost-identical churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto framing the three streets that fan out from it. The central obelisk, brought to Rome by Augustus, predates the surrounding architecture by nearly two thousand years.

Its open, uncluttered layout and surrounding cafés make it a comfortable place to pause, especially compared to the tighter, busier squares nearer the Pantheon. It works well combined with the Spanish Steps, roughly a ten-minute walk away.
