Landmark

Castel Sant'Angelo

4.7 (110,399)$$ · Mid-range

Built as Emperor Hadrian's tomb in the 2nd century, the cylindrical fortress was later fortified by the popes, who used the Passetto di Borgo — a raised corridor still visible along its walls — to flee here from the Vatican during sieges, most famously in 1527. Its layered history as mausoleum, fortress, prison, and papal residence shows in the mix of ancient masonry, Renaissance apartments, and military architecture inside. The rooftop terrace, where the opera Tosca is set for its final act, gives sweeping views over the Tiber and St. Peter's dome. It suits visitors who want history with a view rather than pure art or architecture.

What people say

"It's not much, but nice to get up top to look out at the views. Nice lil café inside as you walk around with lil tables & chairs dotted here & there. The castle is in a lovely spot by the river with the Bridge of Angels infront & was just up the road from the Airbnb we stayed in. Rome is awesome 👌🏻"
