Statue of Saint Wenceslas Riding an Upside-Down Dead Horse

4.5 ·

Look up in the Lucerna arcade and meet Saint Wenceslas on an upside-down horse, Prague's wittiest monument. Study David Černý's satirical sculpture from the upper floor, then stop for a coffee in the passage below.

📖

Full description

Tucked inside the Lucerna Palace passage in Nové Město, this sculpture by Prague-born artist David Černý parodies the traditional equestrian monument of Saint Wenceslas standing in Wenceslas Square just outside. Here the horse hangs belly-up from the arcade ceiling, a deliberately irreverent twist that has made it one of the city's best-known pieces of contemporary public art.

Reviewers note it is free to see, rarely overcrowded, and best photographed from the upper floor of the complex. The surrounding arcade has cafés and shops, so a quick look easily slots into a walk along the square.

Reviews

Hidden inside the Lucerna Palace arcade, David Černý's 1999 statue of Saint Wenceslas on an upside down dead horse is a bizarre and clever take on the famous monument. We checked it out while walking by and it's a really quirky, striking piece of art worth a quick look
