Visit the Soares dos Reis National Museum, Portugal's first art museum, inside the Carrancas Palace. Walk through rooms of Portuguese sculpture, Flemish paintings and decorative arts in a calm, unhurried setting.

📖

Full description

Founded in 1833, the Soares dos Reis National Museum was the first art museum in Portugal and sits inside the 18th-century Carrancas Palace. Its collection centres on 19th and 20th-century Portuguese art, alongside Flemish paintings, sculpture and applied arts.

Reviewers find it relaxed and larger than the exterior suggests, with a layout that shows how art developed alongside political and economic change. Some say a little background reading beforehand deepens the experience.

Allow about 75 minutes, and note that it is closed on Mondays.

Reviews

Nice chilled museum, it was really interesting to learn about how the art developed over the years and how this was linked to political / economic situation. I liked the way it was set out and the building was super fun to explore. Slight downside is at the moment the are renovating the roof and so have the outside…
