Estação de São Bento

4.7 ·

Pause at Estação de São Bento, where a working station doubles as a gallery of Portuguese history. Look up at the azulejo-covered walls of the entrance hall and trace the story told panel by panel.

📖

Full description

Estação de São Bento is a working train station whose main hall is covered in thousands of blue-and-white azulejo tiles that narrate episodes from Portugal's past, from ancient times to the modern era. Entry is free and the station is open around the clock, making it an easy stop in the middle of the city centre.

Most people stay about 20 minutes, mainly to photograph the tilework. It draws heavy crowds, so reviewers recommend visiting early or late.

The Time Out Market sits right next door for food afterwards.

Reviews

Beautiful tiles are entrance but go early or late to get the best pictures before everyone turns up to do the same! Also worth going to Time Out Market next to the station for food
