Walk up to the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez, where a Roman amphitheatre sits among rose-scented gardens. Explore the ancient arena, then spread out a picnic on the lawns.
Full description
Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez combines a landscaped park with the remains of a Roman amphitheatre said to have held up to 5,000 spectators. The arena is well preserved, and further ruins lie behind the Matisse museum nearby.
Rose scents, shady lawns and views make it a popular picnic spot, and a monastery sits close by. The approach from downtown is an uphill climb, but visitors describe the area as a calm retreat away from the crowds.
Entry is free and an easy 45 minutes covers the ruins and gardens.

Well preserved amphitheatre. We walked from downtown which is a bit of an uphill climb, but worth it. The are even more ruins behind the Mattise museum. Also a lovely park and a monetary right behind. A great place to sit and enjoy an afternoon.
