Cross the Isar into Au, a low-key residential corner of Munich far from the tourist trail. Stroll past tall townhouses and local shops, then follow the river path for an easy, unhurried walk.
Full description
Au sits on the high bank of the Isar just south of the centre, a mostly residential area with tall 19th-century townhouses, small independent shops and neighbourhood cafés. It sees far fewer visitors than the old town, which is much of its appeal.
The Auer Dult, a traditional market held on the Mariahilfplatz, is the best-known local fixture, and the Isar paths below the district make for an easy riverside extension. A short walk here shows how Munich residents live away from the main sights.
