Altes Rathaus

4.8 ·

Look up at the Altes Rathaus, the spired medieval town hall that anchors the eastern side of Marienplatz. Admire its Gothic tower and decorated facade, then use the square as a starting point for exploring the old town.

📖

Full description

Standing at the eastern end of Marienplatz, the Altes Rathaus traces its roots to 1310 and has passed through Gothic, Baroque and neo-Gothic forms over the centuries. It served as Munich's city hall until the 19th century and was badly damaged in the Second World War before being rebuilt.

Visitors tend to describe it as fairy-tale-like, thanks to its pointed spires and slender clock tower. It is an exterior-focused stop that takes about 15 minutes, and since it sits right on the square it pairs naturally with everything else around Marienplatz.

Reviews

With its roots dating back to 1310, the building has gone through a variety of forms, from Gothic to Baroque and finally to neo-Gothic. It was badly damaged during World War Two; with the magnificent spire being rebuilt in 1971-1974.
