📖

Full description

The San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts occupies a Neoclassical palace in the centre of Madrid and spreads its collection across five large floors. Paintings, sculpture, architectural drawings and models and some photographs are on view, ranging from 16th-century works to modern pieces, with names such as Goya, Sorolla and El Greco among the highlights.

Reviewers praise the helpful staff and are surprised the museum is not busier given its holdings. Many older pieces are religious in theme.

The calm galleries and building itself make it a rewarding choice for solo visitors and anyone seeking a less crowded alternative to Madrid's headline art museums.
