Parish Church of Saint Barbara

4.6 ·

Slip into the Parish Church of Saint Barbara, an ornate 18th-century church with a monumental stone staircase. Look for the emerald marble altar, the marble statues and the royal tombs inside.

📖

Full description

The Parish Church of Saint Barbara was built as part of a convent founded by Queen Barbara of Braganza, who is buried here alongside her husband, King Ferdinand VI. A grand facade reached by a wide stone staircase leads into an ornate interior with emerald marble pillars at the altar and multiple marble sculptures.

Visitors walk in freely without tickets and often describe it as a romantic and unexpectedly rich find in the Centro district. Opening hours are split between morning and evening, and a visit takes around twenty minutes, making it an easy addition to a walk through the area.

We've discovered here accidentally and I am really glad that we did. Very beautiful church with history. We walked in freely, there were no tickets and stuff. Highly recommended
