The Yellow Bittern

4.0 (164)$$$ · Expensive

The Yellow Bittern operates on the strength of one chef's cooking, with reviewers describing the experience as being in the capable hands of someone clearly skilled and personally invested in every plate that leaves the kitchen. Its lunch-and-afternoon time slots suggest a restaurant built around a shorter, more focused service window rather than typical all-day dining, and reviewers mention it as a birthday treat worth the wait since it opened. At 4.0 stars, expensive pricing for its size, and booking required, it suits a couple or small group after an intimate, chef-led meal over a fast or casual one. Its high hidden-gem score reflects a restaurant still being discovered by wider audiences.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The restaurant is run around a single chef, Hugh Corcoran, whose personal cooking style drives the whole menu.
  • 2It operates on a shorter lunch-and-afternoon service window rather than standard all-day or dinner hours.
  • 3It's been building a following by word of mouth since opening in 2024, still considered a hidden gem.

💡 Good to know

  • 1Booking is required, and given the limited seating and hours it's worth planning ahead
  • 2check the service times carefully, since it operates more around lunch and afternoon slots than typical dinner hours
  • 3go with an appetite for simple, chef-driven cooking rather than an elaborate tasting menu

What people say

"What can I say… this place is marvellous. It is a space where you are in the capable hands of a great man that happens to be a fantastic chef, cooking from the heart and with passion. You can only book in person or by phone, and there is a set menu for 50 pounds that is non negotiable. You can add the delicious oysters from Connemara, or the cheese board, plus the wine they have is incredibly good. The “ bread and butter “ they had was divine, the soup they served was excellent, the venison pie was incredible, the profiteroles, and the coffee from the Algerian coffee store were outstanding. This was a faultless meal prepared with warmth and generosity by a chef that is a genuinely nice person. I felt like I was at home with my family, and the cooking was the kind of hearty, homemade meal that is prepared on a Sunday in Italy, where the whole family is reunited for a meal that starts as lunch and does not end until it’s dinner time. This is a very special place, and I can’t wait to come back."
