Brixton

Brixton became a centre of Black British culture in London after Windrush-generation Caribbean immigrants settled here from the late 1940s, and that history still shapes the area — Brixton Market and the covered lanes of Brixton Village and Market Row are packed with Caribbean and African grocers, fabric stalls, and some of London's best cheap eats. The O2 Academy Brixton is one of the city's premier live music venues, and Electric Avenue, name-checked in the Eddy Grant song, was one of Britain's first streets lit by electricity. Gentrification has brought speciality coffee and craft beer alongside the older market stalls, creating a district visibly in flux. It's at its most alive in the late afternoon and evening.
